Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest Ubisoft title with save issues

November has been a double-edged sword for Ubisoft. The company has managed to launch two massively successful games, Watch Dogs: Legion and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but has had a variety of issues with both. Legion faced criticism over its inclusion of podcasts from a British journalist with exclusionary views towards trans people, and Valhalla received its own social outcry over ableist language and how it portrayed people with disabilities. The two Ubisoft titles now share another issue: save data corruption. In the past few days, a swathe of complaints have hit the Ubisoft forums for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and they all center around save data corruptions on current and next-gen consoles, as well as on PC.

This comes after a similar batch of posts hit the forums for Watch Dogs: Legion. The game has only one save slot, and no way to manually save, so players were essentially gambling with their save until a patch came out. However, in this case, it was found that players force quitting the game while it was closing was to blame for save file corruptions.

Can’t be saved

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a different story though. The game sports multiple save slots and players can save manually whenever they want. Apparently, those differences don’t matter much. Players are finding their saves, both automatic and manual, corrupted, leaving them to delete their saves and lose hours worth of progress or potentially their entire game. One forum post from a player using the Xbox Series X has been acknowledged by Ubisoft support staff, however, the company has not released a statement on the issue.

And before they get too comfortable, PC gamers beware! Later on in the same thread, an Assassin’s Creed Valhalla PC player reported that their auto and manual saves were being corrupted as well. Ubisoft support hasn’t nailed down a reason for why this could be happening just yet, although one potential cause is closing the game or interrupting the game’s online connection while save data is being uploaded.
