Immortals: Fenyx Rising was a result of Monster Energy trademark challenge

The recently concluded Ubisoft Forward gave the world a new look at the rebranded Immortals: Fenyx Rising. The mythical action-adventure went by the name of Gods & Monsters previously, and the sudden name change caught many off guard. Now, we kind of know why that had to happen. According to a new report by VGC, Immortals: Fenyx Rising only exists because of a trademark dispute. The dispute was brought about by the Monster Energy brand, which argued against the game being published as Gods & Monsters.

Opposition papers found at the United States Patent and Trademark Office corroborated the discovery. If you need a clearer understanding, business law firm Hoeg Law has put out a new YouTube video detailing the opposition. Monster Energy first brought up the dispute back in April.

Focusing on the product

Due to Monster Energy’s existing involvement in the gaming space, it felt that the game could have damaged its business. Ubisoft did contest the validity of the claims. However, Ubisoft still decided to change the name two months later. Gods & Monsters was gone, and in came Immortals: Fenyx Rising.

In an interview with VGC, Immortals: Fenyx Rising game director Julien Galloudec explained that the name change was due to a change of vision. Due to the many supposed changes to the game, Ubisoft “decided to change to Immortals: Fenyx Rising, a name that combines the notion of the timeless aspect of the Greek mythology with the immortals,” Galloudec added.

The new name will most certainly have no bearing on the game. It is also likely Ubisoft did not want a potential lawsuit to derail the marketing for the game. Nevertheless, what we saw at Ubisoft Forward hinted at something potentially great. Ubisoft has always produced pretty good results when it comes to mythology. Immortals: Fenyx Rising looks to be no different. After all, saving the world is always a good premise for some adventure.
