Metal Max Xeno: Reborn launches today on PC via Steam

Fifty years ago, the world as we knew ended. Asia’s largest city of TOKIO is now in ruins. Vicious machines have taken over. It’s up to you to fight back. To reclaim what was lost, you fight using an array of weapons, tanks, an armored bus covered ballistic weaponry, and… a Shiba Inu with a variety of guns you can strap to its back. This is the wild, explosive world of Metal Max Xeno: Reborn, which launches today in the West for this first time on PC via Steam, as well as for the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch.

Metal Max Xeno: Reborn is a remake of Metal Max Xeno, which initially launched on PS4 and PSVita back in 2018 in Japan. The remake has been “fully redeveloped,” receiving a graphical overhaul powered by a new game engine. Fresh redesigns have been given to the characters, as well as the game’s enemies and environments.

But that’s not all. As part of the Reborn package, you’re joined by Pochi, bringing back the battle dogs first seen Metal Max 2. Pochi now tags alongside your three-person team as a fourth, and can equip weapons and be powered up by skills. Oh, and, yes, you can pet him.

Scouring a dangerous world

In Metal Max Xeno: Reborn, you take on the metallic menace in the wastelands of Tokyo Bay. The open world of Dystokio is yours to explore, allowing for non-linear progression as you and your team explore and discover survivors. Machines roam about, seeking prey. You can face them head on at your leisure with your army of customizable tanks. Imposing boss fights also await the brave. Dungeons found below the earth yield items to loot and precious materials you can use for crafting weapons and trait chips for vehicles, which offer powerful buffs.

Battling foes uses a mix of turn-based combat and real-time movement. Move around your enemies and take your best shots, or quicken the pace with an auto-command function.

However, before taking on Metal Max Xeno: Reborn‘s tougher challenges, you need to be properly prepared. A revamped progression system helps to get your team up to spec. As your party increases, you can enhance their abilities in their respective skill trees. There are five trees in total, such as “Drive,” “Medical,” and “Repair.” Even Pochi has his own tree, which is simply “Dog.” Because he is a dog.

Gear up and roll out

Naturally, the crux of Metal Max Xeno: Reborn is its electrifying vehicle combat. In the vast landscape, you can scavenge for new tanks. Your home at Iron Base is where you can customize and upgrade your vehicles down to the engine, and even slap on your favorite paint style. There are many options of tanks, from your standard issue tank equipped with a massive cannon, to a battle buss and buggy. Choose the right vehicles to suit your strategy. Will you take out enemies from a distance with a heavy tank, or do you want to keep your enemies on their toes using a more nimble vehicle? How you fight for victory is up to you.

If you’re a fan of JRPGs and mech combat, Metal Max Xeno: Reborn should be able to scratch that destructive itch. Metal Max Xeno: Reborn is available to download and play today on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch.
