In a drastic break from tradition, the next entry in the Yakuza series is coming to Xbox Series X, as well as last-gen consoles, PlayStation 5, and PC. Sega confirmed today that Yakuza: Like a Dragon is releasing on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on November 13. The game is also launching “on day one of its release” on Xbox Series X. Subtlety is not Sega’s specialty, it seems. At least Sega held the PS5 card close to its chest, confirming only that the game is “coming soon” to Sony’s upcoming console.
Xbox Series X owners will get a chance to play the game first, though. Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X and Series S consoles are set to launch on November 10, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon will launch alongside them. PC players will still need to wait a few more days. Even through the Microsoft store, the game is locked until November 12 at 6:00 pm CST. You can watch the latest trailer below.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon? More like a phoenix
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the seventh mainline game in the series (eighth, if you include Yakuza 0), arriving just a few weeks before the first game released on PS2 back in 2005. Although it’ll be a couple of months until Like a Dragon releases in the West, it’s been out in Japan since January. The game has sold exceptionally well in Japan, and Famitsu—the resource for video game reviews in Japan—gave it a 38 out of 40. That’s an impressive score, but Famitsu also gave Final Fantasy XIII-2 a perfect score. You can’t win them all.
If the rest of the series is anything to go by, Like a Dragon will be an excellent game. More importantly, it’s video game history in the making. It’s the first Yakuza game to launch simultaneously across Sony and Microsoft’s consoles, but also the first game to launch simultaneously on PC. Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2—the only games in the series available on PC—all had a few years on PS4 before making their way to PC.
